Its that time again..... so lets dive right into it. In search for the Caribbean short films we were pleasantly entertained when we stumbled upon this film by the name of Voodoo Man. A comedy film with totally relate-able characters. your typical guy falls for girl but embarrasses himself with a bit of a Caribbean twist. Feeling invested the edge team decided we need to know just a bit more and so we reached out to the writer and one of the producers Fabian Guerra and here is what he had to say... Q. What was your inspiration behind the film? A. Voodoo Man was the brain-child of two friends and colleagues of mine, Bagan Tewa and Shari Boodram, while I was studying in New York. We always talked about doing films and we all agreed that the comedy genre would be easier to pull off due to budget restrictions. They came up with the general plot of the story and the character of Baba Doo. We never got around to doing it because I returned to Trinidad after I graduated. When I started living in St Vincent I decided that I should write and complete the film. It was time St Vincent started exploring film Q. What was the message behind the film? A. The message behind the film was to highlight people with low self-belief and lack of confidence through the main character David. The film showed how easily tricked these people are, and how much they could achieve if they ignore other people's opinion and have a little courage. Q. What drives you as a film maker? A. As a child I always liked going to the cinema. It was a haven away from life's harsh realities. You could experience a range of emotions in two hours. As I grew older I realized that some of these stories were not necessarily my story. They were not Caribbean stories. Caribbean people needed to tell their own stories. I decided to take up the challenge. Q. How do you look at film? A. I see film as the best way to tell a story. Some people use words, whether they be written or spoken. Some people paint pictures or take photographs and some use drama. Putting drama in a form that it could be readily accessible to the masses was truly a stroke of genius. Once something is put on film or video it can last a lifetime. Future generations can look back and see what was the mindset through this medium. If you want to get a bit more details about the film ...guess what you can... all you have to do is check out our EDGE CaribReview Episode where we have a good ole time talking about movies.
